When exploring my chosen meaningful object my bike, I had so many ideas come to mind. The movie was to symbolize a journey, around my Pepe’s life to my life. It is a journey explored through the literal sense on a bicycle and the philosophical sense a journey through our lives. It passes through the stages of my Pepes life symbolically and through an abstract representation. The feel of the movie is to project a reality and the endless thoughts that go through my head when riding my bicycle that once served someone else’s journey, my Pepes.

The movie was to be a reflection. Through the sound which was chosen as a repetitive calm instrumental piece that was created through imagining the sounds of happiness. As well with the music I wanted to give it a religious vibe. It may not be direct but many parts in the instrumental music I feel a presence of religion. My Pepe was a proud practicing Catholic and I felt this had be represented in the film somewhere.

The vignetted corners, which frame the movie are to make it more like a  documentary or to add some surreal elements. The movie is suppose to embrace you further into the meaning of my Pepe’s journey while reflecting on the reality of my own.

The script was written from my heart. It was how I envisioned my Pepe’s Journey while he was alive. I wanted to add some french to capture who my Pepe was. The movie was to bring a glimpse of sadness but to overall project all the wonderful aspects of my Pepe’s life. The emphasis was to capture that he had lived a great 81 years, surrounded with love.

The shadows that were a constant element in my filming, was to symbolize a presence. It was a beautiful day when filming and the reflection off the wet ground and bicycle were amazing. They worked well with adding a calm, humble, emotion that I wanted my movie to evoke. When working with the footage, I had filmed about 15 minutes and when I watched it back I felt it was perfect. I started to rearrange the sequencing and cut parts that didn’t fit into the film well. The sequencing was arranged by following the script. It was to coincide with the emotions you would feel at that point in his life. There is a constant shift between highlighting part of travel, with lines, symbols, shadows and than going back to the object the bike. This idea was to pull you in and out of reality, as you follow the script of a mans life while witnessing a journey on a bike.

This movie came so natural to me. As many aspects that I want to highlight and symbolize different meanings came into place with one another well.  It was a great way to express many feeling that I have. Overall I felt it came together well, and carries a great and inspiring reflection of what my Pepe means to me as well the bike that has been passed down to me.

Me Pepe was a gentleman
Born 1927. Died 2008.
Orphaned as a child,
he grew up into a strong individual.
He worked in a Brewer for 40 years.
He married a beautiful lady my Meme.
Together 60 Years.
His five children grew up,
and had families of their own.
His stories were never complicated.
His love was often shown through just his presence.

While sick, he was scared.
I devoted all my time to him.
He hated being alone.
He was so pleasant despite his pain.
I didnt want time to pass.
I wanted him to get better.

He loved my Meme.
Everyday she would lean over and say…
“I love you Bern.”
He would reply, “I love you too.”
Once he added ‘with all my heart.’
I leaned over and kissed him
and said “I love you too Pepe.”
He said, “I love you too but with only half my heart.”
I love you was never expressed out loud before.
but after it just seemed right.

Many storied I share with my Pepe.
He will be with me always.

Bike: my bike means the world to me; it was given to me by my Grandpa. I use it whenever I can and it is just something that I will always cherish. It hold great sentimental value.

Phone: my phone is something that keeps me connected to my family and friends. Because I now live in Toronto the phone is something that keeps me connected to the people I love.

Laptop: This is where I am able to be expressive, and do what I love design. My laptop is very important to me for many reasons.

Camera: The camera is symbolic as in it captures moments in time, plus it is something I want to explore further and learn more about. As well my camera was given to me as a gift from my pepe.

Sketch Book: I am a mega list person. I like to be organized and I make about a million lists of things to do, idea, random thoughts a day. A sketchbook for me is a creative outlet as well as documentation of all my thoughts.

Minnie Mouse: At my cousins birthday party she received from one of my aunts a Minnie Mouse doll. I was around 5 years old and when I saw the toy my whole body started shaking. My Godmother and mother were laughing so hard and were shocked how much I was shaking. They asked my cousin’s mom if I could have the Minnie Mouse doll because I was so excited, and now the toy is mine.

Health Card: I feel privileged to have the free health care system. I have chronic ear troubles, so I have been in and out of the hospital my entire life. Without this free health care who knows where I would be today. It is something I appreciate and do not take for granted.

Ipod: I love listening to music, so my ipod is very important. I listen to music often when doing work to inspire ideas as well always when I travel. Music is definitely something that influences who I am.

Birth Certificate: This is something I feel is meaningful because it is who I am. It reminds me of where I come from and my roots.
